two men high-fiving at work table to represent success found through resources and articles

Resources

There is a lot of information and support for hearing loss out there if you know where to look. Use the resources and articles listed here to tap into a wide variety of programs and peer wisdom. For example, locate the state and federally funded accessibility programs near you. They provide free or reduced cost equipment and services to people with hearing loss. Get to know some of the folks at HLAA or ALDA. They would love to help you learn through their experiences. In addition, get answers to your most technical questions from the engineering-type folks with hearing loss in an online forum.

  • get technical help online

    • Ask on the forum at HearingTracker.com
    • Search the manufacturer’s website with a specific question or for a user guide or online discussion group.
    • Do a simple Google search such as: “how to use (your brand) hearing technology with a (device).
      • For example, “how to use Oticon hearing technology with a computer.”
    • Watch a YouTube video, such as the channel by Dr. Cliff Olson, AuD
    • Join the Mayo Clinic Connect forum to ask questions
    • Take a free online class from Audiology Online
    • Find information from the Ida Institute
    • Tina Childress, AuD and Catharine McNally have an amazing Knowledge Base chock full of info.
    • Seek out articles online by Cynthia Compton-Conley, PhD, a leading expert on HAT.
  • join a local support group

  • find equipment and services near you

    • If hearing loss impacts your employment goals, apply for support services at your state Vocational Rehabilitation Office.
    • Contact a local university Disability Office for recommendations on local services.
    • Contact your state’s Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Commission for info or to advocate.
    • Find free and low-cost equipment and services, such as an equipment distribution program in your area. Learn more.
  • subscribe to a blog

Find support, humor and expert advice from other people with hearing loss. Some of my favorites are:

  • follow a hearing loss group on social media

Groups like HLAA, ALDA and HearingHealthMatters can be found on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. This is a good way to stay updated on upcoming events and the latest news.
