In honor of World Hearing Day today, I’m making a plea for virtual captions. Zoom meeting hosts hold the power to turn on captions for people like me who don’t hear well. You may think people with hearing loss just need things louder, but most of us mainly struggle with clarity. Bits of words get lost in the damaged parts of our ears. I can follow most of a conversation, but once in a while I need to glance down at the captions for a word here or there. Some of us describe it as living in a world of Wheel of Fortune. I can’t really buy a vowel, but Zoom hosts can enable captions in their settings and give me the missing pieces to the puzzle. It makes a huge difference in my quality of life to be fully engaged in events. Not everyone needs captions and they can be downright annoying, but you don’t have to display them. There are many people who do need them and they probably won’t tell you. Although I shouldn’t have to ask, please do everyone with hearing loss a huge favor and enable captions. Learn more here.
